New Bedford unveiling gunfire detection system

By Associated Press  |   Sunday, January 30, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Local Coverage

NEW BEDFORD -- Authorities in New Bedford hope to curb firearm offenses by installing a gunshot-locator system that uses sensitive microphones attached to buildings to remotely pinpoint shootings.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank is set to join New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang, Police Chief Ron Teachman and elected officials Monday to formally launch the ShotSpotter system.

ShotSpotter is a system of strategically placed acoustic sensors linked to a computer designed to help police locate gunfire in high-crime areas.

In Massachusetts, the system is already in use in parts of Boston, Brockton and Springfield.
