Hub MCAS exams may have been tampered with

By Colneth Smiley Jr.  |   Saturday, April 9, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Local Coverage

An investigation into the MCAS exams of a Hub “turnaround school” uncovered testing irregularities including “erasing marks from incorrect answers to correct answers on tests that led to higher scores,” according to a schools spokesman.

MCAS exams from the Blackstone Elementary School in 2010 were scrutinized in an eight-month investigation by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and showed tests taken by third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students may have been tampered with to gain higher ratio scores.

“It is troubling that someone might think they are helping students by attempting to falsely inflate test scores. It’s also unacceptable,” Superintendent Carol R. Johnson said in a release. “Thankfully, we have put strong systems in place to detect these anomalies, so we were able to act quickly to review the irregularities in these scores,” said Johnson.

Questions were raised about the exams last fall by the newly appointed principal Stephen Zrike after he noticed scores seemed higher than anticipated. Zrike left the Blackstone in December for a job in Chicago’s public school system.

Although the investigation by DESE was inconclusive in determining whether the tests were tampered with and could not pinpoint the source of irregularities, the exams were voided because of their unusually high scores.

“Students involved won’t retest, and it won’t effect their grades or progress through Boston Public Schools,” said schools spokesman Matthew Wilder.

Blackstone Elementary receives benefits from the Education Reform legislation after it was identified by the state as one of Boston’s 12 turnaround schools in January of 2010.

More expired food found in Boston schools

By Associated Press  |   Tuesday, March 22, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Local Coverage

BOSTON -- The director of food and nutrition services for Boston’s public schools has been reassigned after inspectors found 280 cases of out-of-date food in 40 cafeterias.

It was the second time this month that food beyond expiration and "use-by" dates has been found in city schools.

School officials also said Monday they have set aside more than 3,000 cases of food in a privately operated supply warehouse in Wilmington because records do not show expiration dates or "best-if-used-by" dates.

Deputy School Superintendent Michael Goar tells The Boston Globe that the discoveries do not necessarily mean students were served expired food, but does show problems in the good management system.

Federal authorities say properly frozen food can remain safe after expiration dates, but it can deteriorate in taste and nutritional value.

President Obama pushes education revival
By Hillary Chabot  |   Tuesday, March 8, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Local Coverage

President Obama told a rambunctious crowd in Dorchester this afternoon that he would push to make America’s education system tops in the world — and told the crowd at TechBoston Academy to honor their teachers.

Obama’s urging comes as Wisconsin teachers continue to protest a controversial push to eliminate collective bargaining.

“You know, in South Korea teachers are known as nation builders,” Obama told a crowd of roughly 400 people crammed into the pilot school’s auditorium. “It’s time we treated the people who educate our children with the same level of respect. We have to reward good teachers.”

Obama made no mention of the continuing struggle in Wisconsin, but he has expressed support of the teachers in the past. The president, who is also in town for a fundraiser, said he visited TechBoston “so that the rest of America can see how it’s done. You guys are a model.”

The pilot school, created partly by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has a higher attendance rate and graduation rate than other schools in the community, said Obama. He vowed to continue to spend on education during his roughly 20 minute speech despite tipping his hat to Republican cries of overspending.

“We need to come up with a budget that forces government to live within its means,” said Obama. “A budget that sacrifices our commitment to education is a budget that sacrifices our children’s future and I will not let it happen.”

Obama will be speaking at a fundraiser dinner at the Museum of Fine Arts later tonight.

Globe Correspondent / December 27, 2010

It was the night before Thanksgiving and Vanessa Daniel, a mother of seven who was six months pregnant, was not feeling well.

She put her children to bed in their Dorchester home and retired before midnight, hoping she would feel better in the morning.

“The next thing I know, I wake up, it’s Thanksgiving, and I’m in the hospital,’’ said Daniel, 33. “I kept asking, ‘Where is my baby?’ ’’

Mold Forces Family Out Of Their Home - Video - WCVB Boston

Hi,

My name is Ayanna O'Brien and yes I am a single mother.  Actually a single mother of six.  My children are 21, 15, 14, 10, 8 and 2 years of age.  I know you have received many letters and I understand that the decision process must be very hard for you. I am also sure that there are a lot of deserving moms out there but if I could just have a couple of minutes of your time to explain to you what this blessing could do for me and my children during this holiday time.

I sort of want to start from the beginning and just let you know that I have always worked since the age of 15.  I must say that on one occasion while I was sick I did reach out for help to the welfare office.  I received assistance for six months and then went back to work and asked to have my assistance stopped.  My children's father was a very abusive alcoholic but I tried my best to hide the bruises and tears as much as possible from my children.  I finally got fed up with it and after begging him to stop repeatedly, I left.  Even though it was hard I was still able to give my children the necessities that they needed.  Although I had saved money for my family, unfortunately, he ended up cleaning my bank account completely out.  All I could do was cry.  I had no money for rent, for food or even just odds and ends.

I have been trying to hang on to my store that I worked so hard to maintain, but I no longer can.  Tomorrow I must move from a mold infested home because my child was hospitalized in the intensive care unit for a week. We cannot take any furniture with us because the State Health Department will be here to force us out.  I have no money for a truck nor do I have any help to pay for one.  I must move back into a neighborhood that I left to give my six children a better life.  Here it is a couple of days before Christmas and I still have no Christmas tree, no presents and barely any hope.

The one thing that I do have is my belief in Jesus and even though I have been praying constantly, I am just not sure how to get my children at least one gift.  Don't get me wrong, there are many children out there just like mine...hoping to get what they want for Christmas. But Jarvis the only things that my children asked me for were beds to sleep in, a tv to watch and a Christmas tree.  So, for only the second time since I became a mother, I am asking someone for help.  Please consider me and my family for your holiday sweepstakes, if not, we would still like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas.

Dot tot found with 17 bags of crack
(crack cocaine in plastic bags - general photo)
By O’Ryan Johnson | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Coverage

A 3-year-old girl in a Dorchester day care complained yesterday that the pink Nike Air Jordan on her left foot was tight, but the teacher discovered the problem wasn’t the shoe.

It was the 17 baggies of crack cocaine stuffed inside, police said.

The teacher notified the principal, who called the cops. When the girl’s mother arrived at the ABCD Walnut Grove Headstart program on Elm Hill Avenue, she told police the girl had complained that morning that her foot hurt, but her mom loosened the laces and shipped her off to school.

She told cops she hadn’t noticed the bags inside the girl’s shoes at the time.

Police said they tracked down Demare Gary, 19, of Roxbury, a relative.

He admitted to stashing the crack in the girl’s shoe the previous evening, cops said.

Gary was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in a school zone. The girl’s name was not released.

Police said a complaint was filed with the Department of Children and Families. Calls to the program’s business number last night after hours were not immediately returned.

Parents blast school closings
Demand chief alter plans before Nov. 3
By Edward Mason  |   Wednesday, October 27, 2010  |  http://www.bostonherald.com  |  Local Coverage
WEIGHING THE FACTS: The Rev. Gregory Groover, Boston’s school committee chairman, speaks during yesterday’s meeting.

An overflow crowd of 600 angry Hub parents lashed out at Boston school chief Carol R. Johnson’s plans to shutter two elementary schools, merge two and a close a high school during a School Committee meeting at English High School.

“By closing our schools, you’re driving a stake in our community,” said Kenny Jervis, a parent at Clap Elementary, slated to close. “We don’t want to go to the suburbs.”

Dozens of parents and teachers clad in yellow T-shirts blasted the decision to close the Early Learning Center day care.

“It would be a disservice to the kids of Dorchester and Roxbury,” said Lisa Kincade, a teacher at the ELC. “I’m asking the superintendent to think about the little ones.”

After earlier community meetings, Johnson had reversed course and scrapped plans to merge two Dorchester elementary schools and shutter a Hyde Park High School, but kept the lion’s share of her ambitious program to remake the city’s struggling schools intact.

Johnson had bowed to the earlier pressure from furious parents angry at plans to merge the Lee Academy pilot school with the Lee Elementary in Dorchester. Johnson made tweaks to her plan ahead of last night’s meeting, such as halting the merger of the Lee schools and allowing the Community Academy of Science and Health — part of the Hyde Park education complex — to remain intact, while possibly moving it from its current location. Green Academy, an in-district charter school, will now replace a current high school in the fall of 2012.

Unchanged are plans to shutter a pair of elementary schools — the Ralph Waldo Emerson School in Roxbury and Clap. The East Zone Early Learning Center would be moved to the William Trotter School in Roxbury and James Holland School in Dorchester. If the School Committee votes Nov. 3 to approve the plan, the schools would close in June.

Richard Stutman, president of the Boston Teachers Union, called the plan a “disservice” and demanded Johnson scrap the plan and start over.

Johnson’s sweeping program for change is part of a dramatic effort to improve the city’s struggling schools. Her proposal targeted several city schools where kids performed the worst on MCAS tests.

Johnson said withering criticism from parents and teachers after the plan was unveiled last month led to last month’s changes, and she wouldn’t rule out more.

“I’m always hearing to the voices of the parents and teachers,” Johnson said. “I’m always taking notes.”

The Rev. Gregory Groover, school committee chairman, said he wouldn’t rubber-stamp the changes: “It’s not a done deal.”
