Rep. John Tierney’s wife completes prison term

DANBURY, Conn. — Authorities say a Massachusetts congressman’s wife has completed her 30-day prison sentence for helping file false tax returns for her fugitive brother.

A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman says 60-year-old Patrice Tierney was released Tuesday morning from a prison in Danbury, Conn. She is married to U.S. Rep. John Tierney, a Democrat from Massachusetts’ 6th District.

Patrice Tierney pleaded guilty last year to aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns for her brother, a fugitive who has been indicted on charges of illegal gambling and money laundering.

John Tierney has said his wife was betrayed by her brother, believing his income came from selling or licensing software to legal Internet gambling businesses.

She must now serve two years of supervised release, including five months on house arrest.

Rep. Tierney’s wife sentenced to prison

Patrice Tierney leaves Federal Court with her husband, Democratic US Representative John F. Tierney, after a federal judge sentenced her to 30 days in jail for aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns.

In a shocking turn of events, a federal judge this afternoon sentenced the wife of U.S. Rep. John Tierney to 30 days in prison followed by five months of house arrest for “aiding and abetting” the filing of a false tax return by her brother, a fugitive from justice.

Prosecutors did not request jail time for Patrice Tierney, asking for 90 days house arrest, but U.S. District Court Judge William Young did give her prison time.

Patrice Tierney’s brother, Robert Eremian, is on the run from federal charges he was operating an illegal Internet gambling operation in Antigua.

She did not make a statement in court and she must report Feb. 28 to begin serving her sentence. It is not clear where she will be locked up.

John Tierney, a Democrat who has represented the 6th Congressional District since 1997, has said his wife was betrayed by her brother and believed his income came from selling or licensing software to legal Internet gambling businesses.

Lawton wages sticker campaign for 5th Suffolk

Lawton wages sticker campaign for 5th Suffolk

Despite losing the September Democratic primary for Dorchester’s 5th Suffolk District, Barry Lawton is waging a write-in sticker campaign and hopes to see a greater turnout this time around. (Ernesto Arroyo photo)
After losing the September Democratic primary for Dorchester’s 5th Suffolk District by a 41-vote margin, school teacher Barry Lawton is betting on a sticker campaign against Democratic nominee Carlos Henriquez.
Lawton, a long-time Democratic Party activist, says he was hampered by low turnout, despite winning 11 out of the 19 precincts in the district, which is centered around Bowdoin Street.
“I won majority of the districts in the primary election because of hard work and getting out there and talking to the voters,” Lawton said. “I lost badly in one precinct and that impacted the outcome of the election but to me the community spoke by electing me in the most precincts in the district.”
While Lawton is banking on increased turnout in the perennially low-voting district, he may face an up-hill battle persuading voters to affix his name to their ballots in the write-in section.
Henriquez, said he is unfazed by Lawton’s sticker campaign.
“It’s well within his legal right to do it, and it does not change our campaign strategy at all,” he commented. “I never had an idea that I would stop reaching out to residents after Sept. 14, because the job has never been about a campaign victory. It is about community victory and raising the voter turnout in our district, whether it is a campaign year or not a campaign year.”
Henriquez prevailed in a four-way race against Lawton and perennial candidates Althea Garrison and Roy Owens. Garrison has endorsed Lawton. Owens is reportedly running his own sticker campaign.
To successfully wage a sticker campaign, Lawton will have to distribute rolls of stickers bearing his name to volunteers at each polling location in the district and persuade voters to affix his name to their ballots in the write-in section.
In the primary, Lawton enjoyed union support from the Boston Teachers Union, the AFL-CIO and the Boston Fire Fighters Local 718. Now that Henriquez is the Democratic nominee, Lawton may face and up-hill battle garnering support, especially from party activists.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Henriquez represents future of Fifth Suffolk District

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Carlos Henriquez
By Jed Hresko
To the Editor:

I am writing in response to last week’s letter to the editor from Barry Lawton about what leadership tradition Democratic Nominee Carlos Henriquez will bring to the residents of the 5th Suffolk District.

In recent years, we have seen two distinct types of political leadership by leaders of color. There are the remnants of the “old politics,” characterized by confrontation and endless negativity, and there is the new style of “getting results” politics, characterized by President Obama, Governor Patrick, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and in my view, Carlos Henriquez.

Carlos has shown his commitment to community by consistently being engaged in improving the 5th Suffolk District. He has worked with residents from all wards and precincts around creating jobs for residents, people of color and women, through the development of the Kroc Community Center on Dudley Street. He has led an organization over the last three years with an incredible staff and 32 resident board members to increase affordable housing, organizing, advocating for teen jobs and increasing voter turnout.

Carlos has served as a liaison and legislative aide on the Boston City Council. He has worked at over a half-dozen community centers and schools, mentoring and advocating for teens in the community.
He has spent three of the last four years knocking doors and actively increasing the community’s civic participation and political consciousness. He has done this without regard to residents’ age, ethnicity or income. I have walked the streets with him as he’s talked to older residents about whom to call for city services; as he’s sat with teenagers and told them where they can find jobs and training; and as he’s consulted with local businesses about improving the local economy.

I have attended over a dozen community actions with Carlos for various issues, from union picket lines to youth jobs rallies to peace marches. He has testified and advocated for policy at both the city and state level.

I agree with Mr. Lawton that what matters is representation and paying full attention to the District’s needs. And it is for these reasons that make Carlos the best candidate. Carlos has consistently represented, advocated for and paid attention to the district’s needs for the last 10 years. To me this is a far different style of leadership than what Barry has presented through his occasional candidacies since 1988, along with his unproductive criticism of past leadership in the district.

I have worked in the 5th Suffolk District over the past 20 years as a political organizer, street worker, and helped manage a local faith-based organization. I lived on East Street for three years and attended Meetinghouse Hill Civic Association meetings. What the District needs is effective collaboration and leadership that is consistently hands-on. Leadership that steps up to do what is needed instead of pointing out what isn’t being done.

Contrast the behavior of Carlos’ 3 opponents – none of whom will accept the voters’ will – to our neighbors to the east. In the 4th Suffolk District (South Boston, Dorchester) after a heated and sometimes acrimonious race for an open seat with nearly four times the voter turnout, the Democratic candidates nevertheless got behind nominee Nick Collins in a show of solidarity. With our Democratic governor and House seats facing a strong challenge, Democrats should be should be fighting side by side post-primary.

On September 14th, the voters of the 5th Suffolk District put their faith, excitement and commitment behind Carlos Henriquez and I am sure he will continue to share his energy, experience and commitment to the community. I support Carlos Henriquez and believe that the voters will again put their trust in Carlos on November 2.
