Blackstonian supports Setti for Senate

Blackstonian is pleased to hear of Newton Mayor Setti Warren's decision to run for US Senate.
Setti is the 1st Black Mayor of Newton and the son of Boston icon, the late Dr. Joseph Warren.

Setti is a sharp, honest candidate who I think is perfect to balance the responsibilities of a US Senate seat. I believe he can navigate through issues of race, class and gender. As the Mayor of Newton, he recently traveled to Roxbury to visit Blackstonian Family Salih Rowe ate Facing Love IV.  This gesture showed not only commitment but the ability to move in either suburban or inner city circles.

The Blackstonian is pleased to support the candidacy of Setti Warren for US Senate.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren jumped into the race against U.S. Sen. Scott Brown yesterday, joining a growing cast of Web-savvy politicians — including President Obama and Mitt Romney — to use YouTube to beam their announcement out unfiltered.

“You’re controlling the message, which is one of the hardest things to do,” said Democratic strategist Michael Shea. “The worst thing is if you have a big announcement and the only thing people are talking about is that your campaign manager parked in an illegal spot or something. It’s no mess, no fuss. Bang, here it is.”

Obama made his re-election announcement on YouTube while Romney used the video Web site to launch his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Yesterday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced on Facebook and Twitter his plans for a presidential exploratory committee while former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty also used Facebook to announce his bid for the 2012 GOP nomination.

“It’s a good strategy mainly because you avoid tough questions on the day of your announcement,” said Republican strategist Rob Gray. “The danger is it gets less coverage, and that really depends on what else is going on in the media that day.”

And because of technological improvements, the cost of making an announcement via social media or YouTube is attractive.

“The technology is more accessible and cheaper than it used to be,” Gray said. “You can do it for a few bucks, when it would have cost thousands, if not tens of thousands, to record an announcement 10 or 20 years ago.”

In Warren’s five-minute video, he touts his upbringing by a Korean War veteran father who “grew up on the most dangerous block in Harlem” and talks about how his parents attended college in North Carolina where they “risked their lives desegregating lunch counters and movie theaters.” In the video’s most poignant moment, he talks about his 26-year-old sister’s death from asthma.

He also uses the video to hit Brown for voting along party lines 87 percent of the time, supporting Bush-era tax breaks and backing unemployment cuts. He also criticized Brown for voting against “the very same programs that helped lift him as a troubled teen out of poverty.”

Brown spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said: “Scott Brown was elected to do a job, and he’s focused on cutting spending and getting our economy moving again. There will be plenty of time for campaigning later.”

Warren, who was slated to make a live announcement this morning at a Newton American Legion Hall, joins a Democratic field that already includes City Year founder Alan Khazei, Democratic activist Bob Massie and attorney Marisa DeFranco.

Warren’s campaign spokesman, Chuck Gilboy, said the 40-year-old, first-term mayor chose YouTube to launch his Senate bid because, “We wanted to have a powerful message for the Web site.

“People are getting his message and his story and his vision. We thought that was a good way to communicate on our first day here,” Gilboy said.

The state GOP immediately bashed Warren for running for Senate less than two years into his first term. “The city of Newton faces very serious financial challenges right now, and Setti Warren’s constituents deserve a full-time mayor,” Mass GOP chair Jennifer Nassour said.

He’s been in office a little more than a year, but already Republican Sen. Scott Brown is beginning to attract would-be Democratic challengers.

Among those said to be weighing runs are Newton Mayor Setti Warren; Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll; Alan Khazei, founder of the nonprofit City Year; and two current members of Congress, Reps. Michael Capuano and Stephen Lynch, as well as former mutual fund executive Robert Pozen.

Warren, who previously brushed aside speculation that he might challenge Brown, issued a statement this week saying he’s now considering a run. Warren is an Iraq war veteran and former aide to U.S. Sen. John Kerry. He’s also Newton’s first black mayor.

James Marzilli sentenced to 3 months in jail

James Marzilli sentenced to 3 months in jail

LOWELL — Condemning his creepy behavior as “repulsive” and “potentially dangerous,” a judge today sentenced former state Sen. Joseph “Jim” Marzilli to three months in the Billerica House of Correction for the grandfather’s 2008 sex-crazed spree in Lowell, when he accosted four women in one day while on official business.

“I think he’s an ill man, I really, really do. I believe the behavior that was exhibited that day was due to mental illness. You don’t live your life for 50 years with no issues and have this come out of nowhere,” Marzilli’s attorney, Terrence Kennedy, said after the sentencing in Lowell Superior Court.

One of Marzilli’s victims was handicapped.

Former state Sen. George Bachrach, a longtime friend of Marzilli’s who came to court to support the legislator, said, “Jim Marzilli made a mistake. He’s going to pay for it. Clearly, he became unglued. How else do you explain what happened?”

Kennedy predicted the Arlington Democrat, who is being treated for bipolar disorder and anxiety, will serve less than 55 days of the punishment superior court Judge Paul Chernoff handed down after Marzilli pleaded guilty to the accosting charges, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

With his wife looking on in tears, Marzilli also admitted there were sufficient facts for a jury to find him guilty of the felony charge of attempted indecent assault and battery for reaching for the crotch of a nurse’s assistant waiting on a bench for a patient.

That charge threatened up to five years in state prison, but because Chernoff continued it without a finding for one year — rather than declare Marzilli guilty, as assistant Middlesex District Attorney Elizabeth Dunigan pushed for — the disgraced pol will not have to register as a sex offender.

He is, however, on probation for five years effective immediately. Upon his release from jail, Chernoff ordered that Marzilli’s first year of release be spent on a GPS bracelet subject to exclusionary zones to be determined by prosecutors. He must also perform 200 hours of community service.

Unable to secure work for the past three years — “Look him up on the Internet. That’s the end of it,” Kennedy said of his employment possibilities — Marzilli has been doing volunteer work with at-risk Somali children and botanical gardening.

On Kennedy’s advice, Marzilli elected not to address Chernoff. Had he, Kennedy said, “I think he would have apologized — to everybody.”

None of the victims came to court, either, though Chernoff stressed each “should be recognized for courageously coming forward.” Authorities said Marzilli said to one victim: “The sex is sweet, the sex is sweet, you want it and you want to go with me.”

In the city on June 3, 2008, for a function at Federal Fabrics-Fibers, Marzilli approached the women both on foot and in a car over the course of four hours, making lewd remarks about their bodies. They, in return, called him a pervert and told him to spend $20 on a hooker.

Dunigan told Chernoff some of the women are now afraid to go to downtown Lowell.

Dunigan said one victim remarked to her of Marzilli, “He makes the law and then he breaks them.”

“At the time of his arrest, he was focused on himself, his career, his future,” Dunigan said. “Maybe in time it can be a little bit about what these women lost on the streets of Lowell.”

Marzilli’s commitment to public service began in 1976, when he served as a legislative aide while a student at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
