A man in his 20s became the city’s first murder victim of the year when he was shot and killed in Dorchester this afternoon.

The man, whose name was not released, was gunned down on Blue Hill Avenue near the busy intersection with Columbia Road at about 1:20 p.m., police report.

Police closed down the area during the investigation causing heavy traffic. Last year the city recorded 74 homicides, the most since the end of 2006 and the first increase in the annual number of murders since Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis took command of the department in December of that year.
